Music Notes – 50-40

Mike & Wilma WilsonOn July 31, 2010, Mike and Wilma Wilson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Family and friends gathered in Parker Hall to toast, roast, and make the most of this gala occasion.

You may not know of another special anniversary, however. Exactly 40 years ago on a hot July evening in 1970, Melvin and I attended a performance in Bardstown of the Stephen Foster Story. As I recall, it rained,
and the production had to shift to the local high school. Nonetheless, it was a crackerjack performance led by Mike and Wilma in their long-time roles as Dr. and Mrs. McDowell, parents of Jeannie with the light brown hair.

Afterwards, in the hot and steamy hallway, we received the wonderful news that Mike and Wilma would join the Calvary adult choir, and they have been at Calvary ever since. Their children, Mary and Matt, were quite small, but began singing with the big people at a very early age. As an added bonus, Mike and Wilma brought Jeannie (Daune Mahy), who would also sing at Calvary until her appointment as Professor of Singing at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

The choir singers at Calvary are unique in many ways, but a special thing besides their obvious musical talents stands out. These singers, numbering over 30, are members of Calvary. They don’t just slink in, sing, and escape! They pledge, and they offer their gifts in other ways as well. Mike and Wilma have both served on the vestry, are both lay readers, host coffee hour from time to time, and headed the flower delivery team for 18 years
