The
meeting was called to order at 5:35 p.m.; Fr. Morris offered an opening prayer.
Minutes of March meeting
Jamie
Hendon moved the approval of the March 21, 2006, minutes of the vestry;
seconded by Corky Sachs. Motion carried.
Committee Reports
Finance:
Andrea Morris presented the financial statements through March 2006. Clyde Warner moved that the report be accepted; Corky Sachs seconded. Motion carried.
Anita
House was commended for her continued excellent work as Bookkeeper.
Stewardship:
Several names of prospective co-chairs of the
up-coming Stewardship campaign were discussed. Downey Gray and Fr. Morris are
to ascertain who of those are willing to serve and report back to the vestry at
the next meeting.
By-Laws/Insurance/Legal:
Nick Baker presented a copy of the by-laws with little
substantive change from the 2001 amended by-laws (particularly incorporating
notes 2 & 3 into the body of the appropriate section and making some
editorial changes). The vestry was asked to look the by-laws over carefully
and, in lieu of the new Article IV – Entirety of the By-Laws, get to Nick any
corrections or emendations.
Worship:
Jim Barnes drew the vestry’s attention to the April 2006 written staff report for Music.
He also indicated that the Worship Committee met prior
to and in preparation for Holy Week. The Committee will meet again on May 2.
Fr. Morris noted that he has established an ad hoc committee for the purpose of
reviewing requests, bequests, etc. that have an impact on the aesthetics of the
worship space. The committee has had its first meeting. David Webb was commended and thanked for the
new Calvary Banner and for the alms basin used at the 9:15 service. Fr. Morris
noted that Memorial Day, May 28, will be the last Sunday for the 9:15 service
until the Fall Services schedule begins. June 4 will be the day the Summer
Services schedule begins (8:00 and 10:30 only). The Bishop’s annual visit and
confirmation is scheduled for June 11. Incense will be used May 28 (Sunday
after Ascension), June 4 (Pentecost) and June 11 (Trinity).
Christian
Formation:
David Webb drew the vestry’s attention to the April written staff report for Christian Formation. David noted that the youth “lock in” Friday, April 21, went well. He also pointed out that Calvary Camp at All Saints is May 12-13. Fr. Morris invited everyone to attend the Inquirer’s Class which begins Thursday, April 27.
Building,
House and Grounds:
Jim Barnes reported for Clyde Warner that the window
sills and the ADT alarm problems are being dealt with. Ginger Ray asked vestry
approval for her to obtain estimated costs for building or erecting closets to
handle the clothes closet operations so as to free up the North Entry for other
purposes. No objections were raised and many suggestions were presented for her
consideration. Nancy Anderson and David Webb were commended for the
improvements to the women’s restroom across from the kitchen.
Outreach:
Jim Barnes drew the vestry’s attention to the April
written staff report for Outreach. Laina Brown noted that breakfast would not
be served on June 4.
Communication:
The vestry’s attention was drawn to the April written
staff report for Communication. Downey Gray presented a request from Whitney
Hardy that the vestry approve running a weekly 1” ad in the newspaper section
“Houses of Worship”. The ad costs $26.70 weekly or $1388.40 for 52 weeks.
Whitney proposes that the Hardys will pay 2/3 of the yearly cost if the vestry
agrees to pay the remainder. Such expenditure was approved.
Parish Life:
Fr. Morris announced that Andy Frazier is making a
photo story of Calvary. He may be seen taking pictures frequently. Ginger Ray
reported that she has received a large number of clothes from “She”. It was
decided that they would be put on sale as a fundraiser during the Bake Sale
weekend (May 14). Laina Brown noted that she had the softball t-shirts. Carrie
Frazier and Andy Dietz will head up the softball team this year. Fr. Morris
noted that he would like to have more time between the two church picnics this
year. He would like the Church Picnic (in the courtyard) after the June 11
service with the Homecoming Picnic in the Fall as usual. The vestry approved of
the idea.
Junior Warden:
Jamie Hendon requested suggestions of non-vestry
persons who could serve on the capital campaign preliminary study committee.
The group will meet for a brainstorming session on June 3 at 9:00 a.m. Several
names were suggested. Jamie also noted that the Endowment Advisory Committee
would meet soon.
Senior Warden:
Downey Gray read a letter from Norman McKenna
requesting that some tribute be made in the name of Elena Durham, a long-time
parish secretary and mother of Frances (Franny) Lewis. Norman suggested that he
would draft the letter of commendation. The vestry agreed with the idea and it
was also suggested that if a new bookkeeper office were constructed, perhaps it
could be named for Ms. Durham.
Fr. Morris reported that he would like to ask the
Reverend Richard Humke to serve as a non-compensatory Priest Associate at
Calvary. He would do some preaching, some celebrating and some adult education.
He would also be a supply priest when Fr. Morris is out of town for which he
would receive payment. Fr. Morris would like Fr. Humke to begin in September.
Corky Sachs moved that the Reverend Richard Humke be named as Priest Associate
at Calvary effective September, 2006; Nancy Anderson seconded the motion.
Downey Gray moved and Andrea Morris seconded a motion that a unanimous vote in
the affirmative be recorded by the secretary; motion carried.
Old

Fr.
Morris noted his appreciation of the vestry for all its work. He asked that
everyone keep looking for the new face in the congregation and extending a
welcoming greeting to them.

Christian Formation Report to the Vestry
April 2006
Last month Calvary's youth hosted hospitality and this
month (the 23rd) Calvary's teachers will host hospitality. Please take a moment to thank our teachers
for all that they do to help our children and youth continue and grow in faith
formation.
The Youth will enjoy a lock-in this Friday, the 21st,
and we are expecting at least 15 youth to participate in numerous activities,
including a scavenger hunt in the church, bowling, watching the new movie,
NARNIA, feasting, etc. Thanks to John
Brown, Michael Hensley, Katherine Gruneisen and Ned Morris for helping
chaperone and making this a fun event.
The past few Sundays the children and youth have
participated in the service by processing, singing, and flowering the cross for
Easter. They also enjoyed an Easter Egg
Hunt (fortunately outside) and resurrecting the Alleluia Banner, which was
carried in the Easter procession.
Thanks to David Webb who designed and prepared the banner, helping the
youth to decorate it with gold lettering.
(The banner had been buried for
Lent at the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper.)
And thank you to Andy Frazier who built the wooden cross which was used
for flowering. Both the cross and the
banner will be delights to see again year and year!
This coming Sunday some of the children will plant
Impatients in the North parking lot in honor of Earth Day. The children always enjoy knowing that they
contribute to beautifying our lovely church, as well as the earth that God has
given us.
Youth confirmation begins this Sunday and we appreciate Ned
and Rhonda who will be leading most of the classes.
Planning for Vacation Bible School is underway with several
meetings already having taken place and more to come.
Please be sure to register for Calvary Camp at All Saints,
which is only a few weeks away.
