Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 5:15PM by The Rev. J. Edward Morris.

 

Minutes of Previous Meeting

Carrie Frazier moved the approval of the July 29, 2008 minutes of the Vestry; seconded by Franklin Starks. Motion carried.

Opening Meditation & Prayer

Fr. Morris read the passage “Natural Links in a Long Chain of Being” by Victor Hanson from This I Believe. He then led the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer.

 

Committee Reports

Worship:

Athans Adoki reported that Mary Redden will direct the youth (or children’s) choir and that a brief Blessing of the Animals will be held after the 11:00 service on September 27. Fr. Morris added that contributions are being accepted by the Animal Care Society.

The ordination of Emily Schwartz to the diaconate will be held at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church on September 5 at 7:00 PM.

The Worship Planning Committee will meet October 7 at 5:00.

Parish Life:

Ginger Ray referred to the agenda for this report.

Christian Formation:

Carrie Frazier and Franklin Starks referred to Callie Hausman’s Report to the Vestry for August.

Stewardship:

Larry Frederiksen reported that Fr. Morris and he are working on setting goals for 2009 to present to the Finance Committee. Larry added that 96% of our 2008 goal has been met and that no new member pledges have been received.

Every Member Canvass for 2009: Larry is asking for volunteers to help with the next canvass. He can be emailed at larry.frederiksen@insightbb.com. Ideas for the pledge card format were discussed.

Outreach:

Fr. Morris reported on the status of Help Ministries for Central Louisville. He is currently acting chair for the organization and Calvary has temporarily taken over food distribution. Additional information can be found in Margaret Dickinson’s Outreach, Music and Communications report for August.

Communication:

Carrie Frazier reported that business cards are being printed for certain staff members. Athans Adoki is working on brochures for the pews. More information can be found in Margaret’s report. The next meeting is set for September 7.

Property:

The Property Committee report was given by Clyde Warner.

o    South Tower – received a proposal and work can start soon for window sill repair and tuck pointing.

o    Sink hole in the parking lot – the #18 parking slot has developed a large sink hole. Systems Parking manages the lot and has filled the hole.

o    Altar rail – still looking for another “fixer.”

A stone bench for the burial ground has been donated.

Finance:

Jim Barnes presented the financial statements for the month of July, 2008.

The restricted altar fund account has been reconciled.

Clyde Warner made the motion to accept the Treasurer’s Financial Reports for July, 2008; seconded by Ginger Ray. Motion carried.

The next Finance Committee meeting is tentatively scheduled for September 21.

Ginger Ray provided a detailed report of the upcoming fundraising event. Seek the Unique is set for Friday, October 24, 6:00 – 8:30 at the church. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be live music. There will be a live auction for a variety of donated items and a drawing for the main raffle item – a Vespa motorcycle – at 8:00. The Vespa is graciously being donated by a Calvary family who purchased it at cost from Jeff Cooke at Vespa of Louisville.  Tickets will be sold $25 per person. Each ticket will admit one to the event and buy a chance to draw for the main prize.

Junior Warden:

Larry Frederiksen is gathering information for the 2009 Vestry Retreat. He is in the process of contacting All Saints Retreat and Conference Center as a possible site.

 

Senior Warden:

Noel Booker was absent - no report.

 

Assistant to the Rector:

Emily Schwartz reported that eight parishioners have registered for Education for Ministry which is offered by The School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee). The Youth-Parent Luncheon is set for September 7 following the 11:00 o’clock service. There is consideration for a bible study for young adults which could be attended on the way to work. Emily’s ordination as a deacon will be held at St. Matthew’s on September 5 at 7:00 PM.

 

Rector:

Fr. Morris reported that Jack Reisz and Harvey Turner have offered to review Calvary’s internal accounting procedures. We remember Downey Gray.

 

 

Old Business

Long-Range Planning:

No report.

Capital Campaign:

Fr. Morris reported that parishioners will be receiving a confidential survey from the Covenant Group. 

2010 Sesquicentennial Celebration:

Fr. Morris, for Noel Booker reported that a committee has been formed and is holding meetings.

Book of Hours:

Fr. Morris reported that the Book of Hours is currently in safe keeping at the Speed Art Museum. Susan Baker is in contact with Ruth Cloudman, a curator at the museum, and Larry Frederiksen will oversee discernment.

 

 

New Business

No new business.

 

Announcements

The following events for 2009 have been scheduled:

o    Vestry Retreat, February 6-7 (pending location availability), location to be determined later.

o    Diocesan Convention, February 27-28, Grace Episcopal Church, Paducah, KY.

o    Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Churches, March 4-7, New Orleans, LA.

 

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Vestry is September 23, 2008 @ 5:15 PM. The meeting will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church with John MacLean officiating Compline.

 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:00 PM with Compline officiated by Will Vail.
