Committee Reports
Finance:
Harvey Turner presented the financial statements
through September, 2004. Nick Baker moved that the report be accepted; Meg
Scharre seconded. Motion carried.
Harvey pointed out two additional accounts,
5580 and 5293 that are related to the repayment of the loan from the Endowment
Fund.
Stewardship:
Sally Reisz reported that Ingathering Sunday is
scheduled for October 31. This will include the ingathering of EMC pledge
cards, the Time and Talent fair, the annual Intergenerational Event, and
story-telling (memories of Calvary). The EMC letter and pledge card will be
sent out to parishioners during the week of October 24.
Worship:
Jim Barnes drew the vestry’s attention to
the October written staff report for Music. Jim announced that a vacancy exists
in the Chalice Bearer schedule due to the resignation of John Cunningham for
health problems. He is in the process of seeking a replacement for the remainder
of this cycle.
Christian Formation:
Gail Richardson drew the vestry’s attention
to the October written staff report for Christian Formation. Gail reported that
Calvary had eight youth who gathered with youth from other area Episcopal
Churches for a retreat at Jillians. Fr. Morris reported that The Forum
regarding resolution 7 had been well attended and went well thanks to Ned
Reiter. Future topics will be Stewardship and a bible study format.
Building, House and Grounds:
In the absence of
Jerry Lyndrup, Jim Barnes reported that the outside
water faucets have been turned off for winter and that the boiler has been put
into operation as well as the heating units in the new section. He reported
that a hazardous condition of the boiler was discovered when it was fired up
but that Walker Mechanical had been called and the situation corrected. He also
reported that Compatible Communications has been called to correct a problem
with the phone and doorbell system. Voice mail has been activated and individual
voice mail will be set up soon.
As requested, a letter from
Clyde Warner confirming the bidding of the tuck-pointing project was submitted
and reviewed.
Sally Reisz indicated that the
window in the rector’s office door will be completed soon.
Outreach:
Jim Barnes drew the
vestry’s attention to the October written staff report for Outreach. The
Outreach Committee will meet prior to the November meeting of the vestry in
order to provide a suggested list of agencies to receive outreach grants for
inclusion in the 2005 budget process.
Communication:
Meg Scharre drew the vestry’s attention to
the October written staff report for Communication. Meg pointed out especially
the October 31 deadline for submitting articles for the Advent issue of the Connection.
Parish Life:
Sally Reisz reported that this round of
Foyer Groups is ending later this month with registration for new groups to
follow soon. Art reported that the first meeting of the Book Club, to be
convened by Lavinia Swain, is October 25.
Junior Warden:
Sally
Reisz reported that the “Meet the Rector” sessions will begin Wednesday
evening, October 20. Sally also reported that she has more and more requests
for name tags for new people every week. She is placing name tags and
remortaring on the wish list.
Senior Warden:
Art Dietz
reminded the outgoing vestry class (Art, Gail Richardson, Ruth Robins and Jeff
Webb) that they are the Nominating Committee for obtaining candidates for the
slate of nominees for vestry elections at the annual congregational meeting.
They need to meet soon and decide how to proceed with congregational input and
other matters.
The Annual
Congregational Meeting was set for January 16, 2005 at 10:00 a.m.
The
purchase of matching clergy vestments (chasuble and stole), burse, veil and
hangings for the Lenten season was approved. A parishioner has already pledged
a sizable portion of the cost of this purchase.
Fr. Morris thanked the vestry for all the
support he and his family have been given. He also thanked Sally Reisz for all
her work in getting the “Meet the Rector” session off the ground.
Old Business:
Art Dietz
reported that included in next year’s budget would be an account for funding
maintenance projects. This account would be funded monthly. Specific procedures
will be forthcoming during the budget preparation process.
Sally Reisz
distributed a list of activities that were funded through the Rector Transition
Fund. The fund has been depleted with some related costs coming from other
sources. Sally also distributed memos from Jim Hill regarding the Endowment
Fund. The Investment Advisory Committee will be present at the next meeting of
the vestry and be available for discussion of this topic.
New Business:
Art
Dietz formally turned the meeting over to Fr. Morris who, by canon, will chair
future vestry meetings.
Fr. Morris
indicated that he thought Parker Hall would be a better place to hold vestry
meetings and would like to do so in the future. He plans to include the Order
for Compline in the vestry meeting process with different vestry members
officiating.
Fr.
Morris also reported that Bishop Gulick has selected December 10 as the date of
the service of the Celebration of New Ministry at Calvary. Fr. John Lane has
agreed to preach at that service with Bishop Gulick as celebrant.
Fr. Morris
indicated that a planning group for The Forum topics would be established. He
also said that he planned to have more Intergenerational Sundays and a Youth
“Meet the Rector” session.
Fr. Morris asked
that employment of security services be put on hold until he had a chance to
see what his presence would do for the situation and until he had a chance to
work with the heads of greeters and ushers to see what could be done.
Christmas Eve
services and the vestry overnight were discussed but no decisions reached.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the vestry is November 16,
2004, 5:15 p.m., Parker Hall, Calvary Church.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:00
p.m. with closing prayer by Fr. Morris,
Respectfully submitted,
James
M. Barnes
Outreach:
1. Food
Donations: This report covers the period from September 17
to October 15. The value of food donations during this period is $2,095. The
largest gift was 1,354 cans of food from Louisville Collegiate School,
valiantly procured by Walter Morris and carried in by Walter and Larry Brown.
Thanks to both of them for their hard work! Food distribution is sometimes hard
physical work!
2. Food
Distribution: During September, we gave out 142 food bags that
fed 207 people. That’s an increase over last month.
3. Clothes Shops
for Women and Kids:
Thanks to clothing contributed exclusively by Calvary people, and thanks to the
intense interest given to this project by our weekday volunteers, the number of
people clothed at Calvary continues to increase. Since September 16, we have
clothed 61 people. Without volunteers Carla McCarty and her friends, Ned Reiter,
Larry Brown, John Cunningham, Joyce Tichenor, Bill Adams, and Lois O’Hara, this
ministry would not be half as successful.
4. Breads: We have sold raspberry jelly,
raspberry-blueberry jam, and grape jelly over the summer, and currently have
some grape jelly to sell. As always, the voluntary proceeds are used to buy
food for our Dorothy Jones Food Closet.
5. Book Aid: Books continue to come in, and are well cared for
by David Webb, with advice from Timmons Owens.
6. Crisis Care (Outreach of sorts!) Jean Dietz has been making calls to the church
most Wednesdays and then following up on those who are sick or in crisis. Meals
have been prepared and taken to some parishioners in crisis, and to the rector
and his family as they settle into their new home. Lois O’Hara also continues
to write welcoming notes to those who sign the guest book.
7. The Refugees: Sherifis, Lasus, and Lil all seem to be doing
well, from all reports.
8. Literacy: ???
MUSIC:
1.
The music
program was instrumental in welcoming our new rector for his first services at
Calvary! In addition to the loyal adult choir, we had a harpist, oboist, string
players, and the Calvary Little Strings for either October 3 or 10.
2.
The gala
Crawford-Frazier wedding on October 9 included not only organ, but harp, choir,
and the youth string orchestra!
3.
In
addition to preparations for each Sunday’s services, plans are now being
formulated for the Pageant music, for Christmas Eve, and for the Bach Society
concert here at Calvary on December 5.
Communications:
1. THE CALVARY CONNECTION deadline will be October
31. That’s a BIG day, with pledge ingathering, volunteer signups, and
intergenerational activities, so plan to be at Calvary for all of those things!
Especially remember the deadline, and articles will GLADLY be accepted early!
2. Webmaster Jim Barnes continues to do a fantastic
job of updating and adding to the Calvary website. To date, 7,754 visitors have
logged in to our website since March 31, 2003. We average over 400 visits per
month, and you can learn all sorts of things about Calvary in this way. Log on
to calvaryepiscopal.org
3. The volunteer brochure listing Calvary’s
ministries is in preparation and will be ready for October 31.
4. The Episcopal News published an article about MLD
in the last issue, and is working on one for the next issue featuring our new
rector. Nice to see Calvary mentioned!
5. The e-mail system at Calvary has been expanded,
updated, and generally redone! Each staff member now has a private e-mail
address. The church has a general address as well, and the calv821@aol.com
is also still operable. So you can e-mail any and all of us at any time, and we
encourage you to do so! For all of the individual addresses, please consult the
October 17 bulletin.

Christian Formation Report to the Vestry
October 2004
There is a lot
of enthusiasm in the upstairs classrooms among the students and teachers. We are all delighted to have Father Morris
with us, who has already visited some of the classrooms, and will be visiting
all of them soon, as well as meeting specifically with the youth. For the last few weeks, the youth have joined
and participated in the Forum.
This Sunday we will begin Pageant Costume Try-ons
in preparation for the Christmas Pageant on Sunday, December 19.
The Calvary Youth Group was invited to join St.
Matthew’s Youth Group to a social outing at Jillian’s, which was a great
success. There were nine who were
present for the event. There are going
to be many other joint youth events with St. Matthew’s,
St. Mark’s, Advent, OMS, and St. Andrew’s, as
most of us have relatively small groups and this is a wonderful way to build
community and meet our “neighbors.”
Calvary will be organizing an ice skating party for the “Louisville
youth.”
I appreciate the effort of everyone in the
Christian Formation program who contributed to the gift of appreciation for Father
Humke, as well as the welcome poster for Ned and his family.
The children and youth have been working on
posters for the last few weeks that will be displayed for Calvary’s Ingathering
on Sunday, October 31. Also on that
day, there will be an intergenerational Christian Formation program, Moments in Calvary’s History.
On November 7, during the 11:00 service we will
have a Commissioning of Teachers, and I hope that many will personally share
their appreciation with our teaching staff for the work and blessings they
bestow on Calvary’s younger members.
Recently the Children’s Ministry Team for the
Diocese/Christian Formation Diocesan Committee, of which I am a member, met
with Jay Magness to discuss future plans.
I feel that it was one of the most productive meetings in recent
times. Plans for promoting and
organizing Christian Formation within the Diocese are abundant. When we all work together and help each
other, we all grow that much more.
November 21 is a meeting for Teachers. After volunteers have had a chance to
signup, I will be scheduling a meeting of the Christian Formation Advisory
Committee.
Thank you for your support!
Callie A. Hausman
Christian Formation Director
