  • Pastoral Care | calvary-episcopal

PASTORAL CARE Pastoral Care One of the ways we embody the love of Jesus Christ to one another is by caring for each other. The Apostle Paul encouraged the church to bear one another’s burdens. Pastoral Care at Calvary encompasses a variety of ministries, including the sacraments of the church, communion and pastoral visits, prayer, flower delivery, transportation, cards and calls, and meals for those in need. Pastoral Care and Prayer Request Form To request a visit from clergy or lay ministers, call or email the Rector, The Rev. Dr. Lee Shafer in the Church Office at 502-587-6011 . If desiring to add a name to the intercessory prayer list, prayer cards are also available in the pews and may be placed in the Offering Plate or handed to an usher. Typically, names remain on the Prayer List for four weeks. Respecting confidentiality, we usually use only first names. When to Call a Member of the Clergy Any parishioner may call at any hour of the day or night, seven days a week, in the event of a pastoral crisis such as someone dying, someone in grave danger, or other pastoral emergency. If possible, a priest should be called when someone is near death to administer Last Rites and pray with the family. If not possible, a priest should be contacted whenever a parishioner has died. When someone is ill or hospitalized. When someone is experiencing distress and needs pastoral care. When someone wants to discuss spiritual or theological matters. When someone has reason to celebrate. When someone just wants to talk to a priest. Anyone may call the church office to set up an appointment for a non-crisis visitation. Hospital Visits When parishioners are sick and/or hospitalized, the Rector of Calvary, once informed, is happy to make a pastoral visit. Other Feel free to contact the Rector for other services such as Reconciliation of the Penitent, Thanksgiving for the birth of a child, Blessing of a home, etc. Home Visits and Eucharistic Visitors Sometimes people are unable to attend worship services due to illness, prolonged recovery, or simply the aging process. In such instances, lay Eucharistic Visitors will be glad to bring Holy Communion to you. This ministry exists to supplement rather than replace clergy visits. If you desire home communion, please contact the Parish Office. At Calvary Episcopal Church we use a team of trained lay Eucharistic Visitors to provide the sacrament to those who are hospitalized, homebound, or in nursing homes. Those engaged in this ministry must be licensed by the bishop and undergo a diocesan training session.

  • Nursery | calvary-episcopal

NURSERY Children's Nursery Second Floor, Room 214 but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. - Matthew 19:14 Children are welcome at all points during our worship. During liturgies, parents are encouraged to bring their children to the altar for Holy Communion or a blessing. Infants and toddlers experience the love and comfort of the church family while being cared for during classes and services. Our Nursery is located on the 2nd floor, Room 214, and is available from 9:15 a.m. to 12:00 noon Sunday mornings. Nursery Staff Calvary's Nursery is staffed at all times by two experienced childcare professionals. Darlene Clay has been caring for Calvary's children for 20+ years and Joann Wingfield has been on staff for 7+ years. Pre-school Curriculum As children become pre-school aged (2-4 years), the nursery staff starts to introduce Bible stories and prayer to learn about God and Jesus at an early age. Typically, snacks are available and outdoor play in Calvary's courtyard play set is encouraged as the weather permits Childcare Policies In order to make sure that our nursery is a happy, safe, and fun environment, we have established the following guidelines: Please make the staff aware of any allergies or medical needs when you leave your child. When you arrive, please sign in your child. The nursery opens 10 minutes before each service and closes 15 minutes after its conclusion. Please do not leave the church while your child is in the nursery. Many times, young children cry when they are dropped off in the nursery. Some separation anxiety is normal for young children, and they are usually easily distracted soon after they arrive. In some cases, children continue to cry. If we are not able to console your child, you may be notified by the nursery staff. Illness Please help us keep our children healthy by keeping your child with you if they have any of the following symptoms: Coughing/sneezing Runny nose (colored discharge) Fever Vomiting/diarrhea within 24 hours Contagious disease (Chicken Pox/pink eye) Inflamed mouth or throat Chest congestion/labored breathing Open sores Colored discharge from eyes If you have any questions about the Calvary Nursery, or childcare, please contact the Church Office.

  • Introduction | calvary-episcopal

HISTORY Calvary Episcopal Church was founded on December 24th, 1860 by members of the Sehon Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church. The cornerstone of the original octagonal structure was laid in 1872. Completion of the rest of the church, resulting in a variation of a classic Latin cross plan, began in 1888 and was concluded with electrification and gas heat in 1892. Calvary is in the Victorian Gothic Revival style with limestone exterior. The South Tower was the only cut-stone spire in the US until 1943. The North Tower is crowned with a bishop’s crook (crozier), although Calvary did not become a bishop’s seat. The church has a wealth of stained-glass windows and woodwork, some of which hail from Tiffany Studios. Other aspects represent a variety of periods and styles. The ceiling of Norwegian spruce is patterned after the 14th century hammerbeam roof of Westminter Hall in London. Calvary has had many additions and alterations since its construction, including installation of a magnificent Casavant organ with exposed pipes in 1965, and Victorian-period Stations of the Cross in 2012. Calvary offers a self-guided walking tour of notable art and artifacts. Find the brochure in the back of the Nave. • Urban Partnership | calvary-episcopal

URBAN PARTNERSHIP The Urban Partnership is a coalition of seven Episcopal congregations aligned in collaborative partnership to venture into, support, and strengthen new and ongoing ministry within the urban neighborhoods of Louisville, Kentucky. The Urban Partnership started as a consortium of four downtown Louisville Episcopal churches: Christ Church Cathedral, Calvary, St. George's, and Our Merciful Savior. These four churches are bound together by a shared mission of bringing Christ to and meeting the evolving needs of the urban city center. Formed in 2014 as a working group in the Diocese of Kentucky, to assist the realization of untapped resources and assets of the four churches in the urban core of Louisville, the Urban Partnership is now a fully functioning organization. Other sub-urban churches have joined as associate members and include Church of the Advent (Highlands), St. Clement's House Church, St. Thomas (Westport Road) and St. Paul's (Taylorsville Rd.) In 2017, members of the Urban Partnership joined together for prayer, workshops and the visitation of historic landmarks to discuss how the Church will work toward dismantling racial prejudice still present in our society. Expressions of the Urban Partnership are in Vacation Bible School, Lessons & Carols, Coffee Hour Receptions, Shrove Tuesday, and Laundry Love. • Choir | calvary-episcopal

CHOIR The Calvary Choir Sing Joyfully, Unto God Our Strength Calvary Episcopal Church supports and maintains a historically remarkable music program. The choir is led by Jacob Cook, Director of Music. We are also happy to have Owen Sammons as our organist. From 1964 until their retirement, Calvary's choir was led by Melvin and Margaret Dickinson, founders of the Louisville Bach Society. Margaret continues to contribute to our music program through her role as Musician Emerita. The Choir’s diverse repertoire consists of traditional and contemporary expressions of Anglican choral music as well as other sacred music from other classical traditions. With Calvary being the home of one of the finest choral libraries in Louisville, The Choir sings at the 10:30a.m. worship service each Sunday as well as Choral Evensong and Bach Vesper Services, detailed under the Calvary Music page. A cornerstone of the Anglican choral tradition, the Choir leads the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. In 2018, Calvary hosted the first Louisville Three Choirs Festival, joining the Choirs of Christ Church Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption to share their musical traditions. Our Choir is an exceptional group of singers including professional section leaders as well as talented church members—and some who are both.
